To Reward or Not Reward That is the question

What rewards do we have for Creating A New Beautiful And Courageous Existence? That’s where the problem lies. What is a reward? Can we afford said reward?

Well the dictionary definition of reward is:

  • A thing given in recognition of service, effort, or achievement.
  • A fair return for good or bad behaviour.

There is a lot written about rewards helping with motivation specifically in the work place, can we apply this to our lives as well. We can but first we need to decide what will be the trigger/reason for having that reward. We also need to decide what the reward will be.

There’s an interesting article about the psychology of rewarding yourself with treats that you can read here.

I’ve also recorded some of my own thoughts.

Sweet and sticky rewards

I talked on Wednesday about a little of what you fancy does you good which you can read here. In that blog I looked at why it is a little rather than a lot, as a lot of what you fancy is often bad for you. Following on from that blog this blog about rewards follows on nicely.

As a reward for not eating the naughty’s during the week we treat ourselves to a hot chocolate and a “sticky bun” on a Sunday. Actually, we prefer a cookie or a Kouign Amann (a Breton pastry) from a very good artisanal bakery in the local town of Monségur.

Yes, this is an indulgence and it is a reward; because if we have had an “indulgence” during the week we do not have the Sunday treat.

Planning these weekly rewards is helping us to eat more healthily.

No, really it is!

It’s making NOT eating the “naughty” things we used to easier. We know all we have to do is wait until the weekend for our treat. This is stopping us from over indulging on unhealthy food for the rest of the week.

When is a reward no longer a reward?

The risk of having the same reward on a regular basis is that it stops being a reward. If we still had the treat on a Sunday even if we had eaten badly during the week then it would not be a reward. When you don’t pace yourself, you give in to temptation.

Here’s a quote which sums up rewards:

“The most valuable advice I can give is plan for your success. Write down your ideal goal,
creating checkpoints for yourself along the way that align with the end goal. Set up rewards
for achieving both little victories and big ones."
Hilary Knight

Try to make some of the little things rewards as they are easy and not expensive. That way you can have a reward “regularly” leaving the big expensive rewards as real luxuries for the major achievements.

Practice makes perfect

It’s all well and good writing about things in theory: however, we need to start applying what we learn. Look at what you can give yourself as a little reward and what that reward is for.
